JENKINSON’S – FLORENCE & JOHNNY

David Chudy, played the bagpipes in a “Scottish Self Defence Regiment’ on the Copperbelt during WW2 and he retained the pipes, to prove it. There were no Scots in that regiment – only a motley bunch of Eastern European Jews – or so it was said. Playing the pipes is likely to earn one the title of ‘honorary Scot’ but David and Ellen enjoyed a better cultural connection to Alba through their long term friendship with Florence and Johnny Jenkinson, who hailed from Scotland.

Both they and the Chudy’s began in Northern Rhodesia and then moved to Southern Rhodesia. Photos trace common activities such as holidays in the Nyanga or Vumba mountains and seem to point to participation in a play on all their parts as mentioned in Ellen’s Memories. John was a health inspector in very remote tribal areas on Save Valley (then called Sabi Valley). David and Ellen made trips to connect with him in these areas rarely visited areas and many early photos of historical interest still present in the collection and featured here.
