Nothern Rhodesia – Copperbelt – Refuge from WW2
The Copperbelt and Chingola in particular is where Ellen, Her Father Richard, Brother Fritz and cousin Helmut received refuge from the war. Logically a major culture shock for all of them to taste the vastness of the African continent, its culture and climate. But there very little sense pf that in any of their letters and notes. Colonials who went out there for gain might take to complaining about the conditions and lack of amenities. Ellen, still a teen would wax sentimental about the temperate northern seasons and countryside that meant so much to her in the Europe of her childhood. That yearning would last a lifetime, but it was soon accompanied by an equally strong attachment to Africa and its seasons space and moods.
