ELLEN CHUDY (1922-1994)

GERMANY TO AFRICA – A LIFE

THE HOME

The Montgomery Rd home in Highlands was regarded by many as a physical as well as cultural oasis in the day – one of those places that one never had to leave – and Ellen remained there till her death.

Not only was it a place with lush mature vegetation and almost ‘unique for its time and place’ modern architecture, it was a home where guests could unwind intellectually. It was a place filled with artistic artifacts – not least David’s paintings and sculpture. Guests arrived unannounced (as was regarded as the norm in those days).. And their often passionate discourse competed with the loud sub tropical birdsong in the garden. Most properties, especially in the early days were exposed and barren.. In the years of political turmoil – this was a place where people of all races and pre-dispossessions would gather.

Circa 1955 the government decide to put a railroad through the Chudy’s terrazzo and marble factory cum attached home, which was situated in the so called ‘heavy industrial sites’ part of Salisbury. Harnessing their own architectural construction capabilities in the form or Terrazzo Company – and with the proceeds of the enforced sale, this place was built – as well as a new modern factory building.
